What is the best time of day to take Ashwagandha, and with what?

I bought Ashwagandha root powder to help with stress and energy but I'm not sure when to take it or what to mix it with. Morning or night? With food or without?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an adaptogen, meaning it modulates the stress response rather than simply sedating or stimulating — so it works both for energy and for sleep depending on how and when you use it. But timing does matter.

For stress, anxiety, and sleep: Take it at night, 30–45 minutes before bed, mixed with warm full-fat milk (dairy or plant-based) and a small amount of honey or jaggery. Warm milk enhances absorption of the fat-soluble withanolides (the active compounds), and the nighttime dose allows Ashwagandha to lower cortisol during the window it naturally needs to drop for deep sleep.

For energy, stamina, and mental focus: Take it in the morning with warm milk or a light meal. This works well for people who feel fatigued but not anxious — the morning dose supports sustained energy without caffeine dependence.

If you want both effects: Many practitioners recommend splitting the dose — smaller amount in the morning, larger dose at night.

Dosage:

  • For root powder: 1–2 grams (about ¼ to ½ teaspoon) per dose. Start at the lower end.
  • Standardised extract capsules (KSM-66 or Sensoril): 300–600 mg per day is well-researched.

What to avoid mixing it with:

  • Cold water or cold milk — reduces bioavailability significantly.
  • Stimulants (coffee, energy drinks) in the same window — counterproductive.

Who should be cautious:

  • Pitta-dominant individuals should monitor for heat, skin inflammation, or irritability — Ashwagandha has a mildly heating quality. If this occurs, pair it with Shatavari or take it with coconut milk instead.
  • Pregnant women should avoid it.
  • If you are on thyroid medication, check with your doctor first — Ashwagandha has a documented effect on thyroid hormones.

Give it 4–6 weeks of consistent use to assess full benefit. Many people notice sleep improvement within the first week, but the adaptogenic stress-response benefits accumulate over 6–8 weeks.

I've been taking it at night for three months now and the change in sleep quality was noticeable by week two. The warm milk combination makes a real difference versus just mixing it in water.

Try the KSM-66 standardised extract if you want more consistent results than raw powder. The potency of raw powder varies a lot depending on the source.
